Tara LaRowe, PhD, RDN, CSSD, CD
Tara has over 20 years of experience in the field of nutrition and health promotion. She is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and board certified in sports dietetics under the commission of dietetic registration.
For reference, the Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) credential requires over 1,500 hours of sports related nutrition practice and completion of an exam every five years. Just over 1,000 dietitians nationally maintain this certification.
General RDNs can give guidance to healthy eating, but sports dietitians understand the energy systems and fueling and hydration needs before, during, and after training. Sports RDNs can also provide safe advice for supplement use.
Tara’s background in community-based research allows her to offer unique services of comprehensive needs assessments and offer strategies to improve the food and nutrition environment within a variety of team and other athletic programming.
Her clinical experience in preventive cardiology and cardiac rehab—counseling skills to help patients make dietary changes based on their goals and preferences.
Tara’s personal experience as a youth athlete and transition into an adult master’s athlete gives her a wide appreciation of nutritional needs at every life stage. As a mother of two hockey and golf players, ages 15 and 17 years, she is passionate about empowering young athletes to optimally fuel for their active lives and develop lifelong healthy habits.
Tara resides near Madison, WI and is faculty in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She teaches three sports nutrition courses, both undergraduate and graduate, and mentors the next generation of dietitians.
